The smartphone is a modern marvel. It’s a pocket-sized gateway to the world, offering instant connection, limitless knowledge, and a constant stream of information. But as with all tools, our relationship with it is a double-edged sword. The device that promises convenience, entertainment, and productivity is also an instrument of spiritual decay, subtly pulling us away from the deeper dimensions of life. From a spiritual lens, the smartphone acts as a digital scrying mirror, reflecting not just our desires and anxieties but also distorting our perception of reality.

In both historical and modern-day practices, a scrying mirror — a reflective surface used in divination — serves as a portal into otherworldly realms. Through intense focus, practitioners attempt to perceive visions or communicate with the unknown. Today, many of us use our smartphones in a similar way, fixating on their screens as they reveal the latest headlines, social media updates, and messages. The irony is that while the scrying mirror seeks to explore the spiritual unknown, the smartphone ensnares us in an endless loop of superficial engagement, keeping us anchored to the mundane and material.
